Your guide will conduct personal tours of Whakarewarewa Geothermal Reserve, and Ohinemutu, an authentic Maori village in the heart of Rotorua, which the same Maori tribe has inhabited for over 600 years. Your host will then give an enjoyable informal lecture on geothermal activity in the region and a private tour of the Rotorua Museum of Art and History. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy. Your accommodation for the night is Millennium Christchurch, located in the heart of Christchurch's Cathedral Square, offering exceptional service and an abundance of atmosphere. This afternoon is yours to explore the sights. At your leisure board the historic Christchurch Tramway and follow a 2.5km loop around central Christchurch taking in some of the most interesting sites, including Cathedral Square, the Arts Centre and quirky New Regent Street.

An early start this morning as you board the famous TranzAlpine train, rated as one of the world's top six train journeys. From your carriage you'll see the fields and farmland of the Canterbury Plains; followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then heads towards the Southern Alps where you disembark at Cass. You will be collected from the train station and transferred to Grasmere Lodge High Country Retreat, where luxury and natural splendour come together in the heart of the Southern Alps. This traditional New Zealand high country station, set amid towering 2,134 metres/7,000 foot peaks, offers a richness of traditional New Zealand hospitality. Owner, Tom Butler, and his staff epitomise New Zealand friendliness and generosity of spirit. Tonight join your hosts for cocktails followed by a five course gourmet dinner. Day 8| Southern Alps
Following breakfast embark on a 4WD farm tour. This lasts about 90 minutes, and takes you to viewpoints where you wouldn't drive yourself. It gives you a chance to see the extent of the 5,260 hectares/13,000 acres of Grasmere Station, and to ask any questions you may have about the lodge, the station or the country as a whole. The prime aim at Grasmere is for you to relax. If they find a guest asleep with a book in the library, it is taken as a compliment! Some like to escape from city life by expending energy: going fishing, horse riding or hiking on the private tracks available only to guests. Others enjoy more leisurely activities including resting by the pool, being pampered in the spa, or picnicking under a willow tree by one of the nearby lakes. This evening join the other guests for dinner or if you would like some private time, Grasmere has other dining options, such as the fireside Hawdon room, or the conservatory beside the rose garden. The clean air and bright skies of the South Island high country conspire to bring your senses alive. Refreshed and recharged, farewell Grasmere boarding the TranzAlpine for the West Coast township of Greymouth. Collect your rental car and begin your drive down the South Island's wild west coast. On the West Coast there's no doubt you are in a remote corner of the world, few other cars pass and those who do will usually wave. Your coastal drive takes you through towering kahikatea forests to the township of Franz Josef Glacier prior to arriving at Fox Glacier. Your home for the next two nights is Misty Peaks, boutique accommodation offering the very best in quality, comfort and genuine Kiwi hospitality. Overnight Misty Peaks B

Today take the opportunity to experience this unique location. While many glaciers worldwide have been retreating, these glaciers still flow almost to sea level, making them unique relics of the last Ice Age. There are several good glacier viewpoints that can be accessed with little walking. Other walks require a little worthwhile footslogging! For the more adventurous we highly recommend heli hiking or taking a scenic flight over Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, including a spectacular circuit of the summit of New Zealand's tallest peak, Aoraki (Mount Cook). For those not afraid of a bit of mud, a quad biking safari is a really fun adventure.
