Adventure travel in Bolivia

In just 16 days, this independent adventure travel brings together all of Bolivia’s highlights on a balanced itinerary that will please both culture buffs and those nature lovers alike.

After exploring La Paz, the world’s highest capital, we discover this country’s fantastic and untamed deserts, stopping in Lake Titicaca on our way. With more than forty islands spread over a surface area of over 8000 km2, this is the world’s highest navigable lake. There can be no doubt that this region is where Indian cultures and lifestyles have managed to survive with the most authenticity determinacy. Adventure is waiting every step of the way on this Bolivian expedition as you head to the wild regions of the Altiplano in Bolivia’s south. You’ll also spend 3 days in Potosi and Sucre, both cities classified as UNESCO world heritage sites – just to make sure you get a taste of this country’s rich history. Along with you private local guide, this independent adventure in Bolivia is complete in every respect. It’s an ideal program for those who want to make truly spellbinding discoveries!

Itinerary

Day 1| International Flight - La Paz
Transfer from the airport to your hotel in La Paz colonial center. Meet your English-speaking trip representative for lunch and discuss some trip details. In the afternoon, go on a private English-speaking city tour of La Paz, a surreal city filled with history. Make your way from the highlands (3800m) to the lowlands (3000m). Evening of free time. Overnight in a hotel in La Paz. Dinner included.

Day 2| La Paz - Tiwanaku - Copacabana
A private vehicle picks you up at 8 am at your hotel for a visit to Tiwanaku archeological site along with your English-speaking guide (90 min). Explore these pre-Columbian relics, considered among the most important in the continent. We then make our way towards Lake Titicaca and the Royal Range before reaching Copacabana. Visit the city’s most interesting sites: Horca del Inca, the cathedral, etc. Make your way up Cerro Calvario to enjoy sunset (make sure you bring a flashlight for the return). Overnight in Copacabana.

Day 3| Copacabana - Sun Island
Early morning departure from your hotel to hop on a boat heading to the famed Island of the Sun. You have a half-day walk to explore this mythical island at the center of Inca Cosmology, exploring various temples from many different cultures. A magical night spent at a local villager’s home (rustic accommodation) will give you a unique opportunity to experience the peaceful atmosphere of this timeless island. When night comes, turn your eyes upwards towards the stars: the night sky at Lake Titicaca is bursting with stars and is often considered one of the world’s best stargazing destinations!

Day 4| Sun Island - La Paz
A short motorboat ride (20 min) will take you to Yampupata Island. Take a stroll on the peninsula to Copacabana by way of the village of Zampaya (about 4-5 hours). On your way, visit the replica of Our Lady of Lourdes. Private transfer back to La Paz. (3½ h)

Day 5| La Paz
Free time in the morning to relax and enjoy the city. Early in the afternoon, a private transfer will take you and your private guide from your hotel to Moon Valley, in the Zona Sur (South District). You’ll have about 2 hours of easy walking to explore this incredible geological formation. Return to your hotel late in the afternoon. Overnight in La Paz.

Day 6| La Paz - Uyuni
Private transfer from your hotel to Oruro train station. On your way, take a dip in the thermal pools in Urmiri and enjoy the superb scenery. From Oruro, a “special” southbound train will take you across the Altiplano until you reach Uyuni, a town on the edges of the Salar that takes visitors back to the Far West. Train lovers won’t be disappointed!
Breakfast included

* If this day falls on a Tuesday or Friday, the bus for Oruro leaves at 10 am and arrives in Oruro around 2 pm. The Expreso del Sur leaves at 3:30 pm and arrives in Uyuni at 10:20 pm.
* If this day falls on a Wednesday or Sunday, the bus for Oruro leaves at 2 pm and arrives in Oruro at around 6 pm. The Wara Wara train leaves for Uyuni at around 7 pm and arrives in Uyuni at 2:20 am the next morning.

Day 7| Uyuni - Salar
You and your private guide leave your hotel at around 9 am in a private 4x4 vehicle and head towards the Salar de Uyuni (alt: 3650 m), the world’s largest salt desert. Stop for a visit to Colchani’s salt works on your way and then travel to the heart of the Salar on the volcanic Island of Incahuasi, also called Isla del Pescado, where you’ll marvel at the giant cacti and Stromatolites. On your way back, stop at a salt hotel where you spend the night. Overnight in the Salar.

Day 8| Salar - Potosi
In the morning a private vehicle takes you on a superb panoramic road to Potosi, where you should arrive some time in the middle of the afternoon arrival. This mining town is full of history and filled with jewels of Baroque architecture. Settle into your hotel. Overnight in Potosi.

Day 9| Potosi
This morning, your private guide takes you on a city tour of Potosi, including a visit to Casa de la Moneda followed by the silver mines of Cerro Rico, where more than half a million slaves perished. This is an interesting and surprising visit, though it is not recommended to those who suffer from claustrophobia. Typical lunch included. In the afternoon, travel down from the city highlands to a warmer valley where you’ll find the thermal pools of Lake Tarapay, also called the eye of the Incas. Return to your hotel late in the afternoon. Overnight in Potosi.

Day 10| Potosi - Sucre
A private vehicle will pick you up at around 10 am and take you across rivers and Andean mountains to the peaceful city of Sucre. Free time for the rest of the day.

Day 11| Sucre
In the morning, a tour of the colonial city along with an English-speaking guide will allow you to discover this UNESCO world heritage site, taking you to the textile museum, the casa de la libertad (closed on Mondays), La Recoleta Convent, and the cathedral. Typical lunch included. Free time in the afternoon. Overnight in Sucre.

Day 12| Sucre - La Paz
Leave your hotel in the morning on a private transport to the airport 2 hours prior to takeoff for your flight to La Paz (50 min, schedules subject to change depending on the day of your flight). Staff welcome at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Breakfast included.

Day 13| La Paz - Chalan
Transfer from your hotel to La Paz airport for a flight to Rerrenabaque. When you get there, a motorized pirogue will take you to the heart of Madidi National Park, a resort which boasts the world’s most varied fauna and flora, encompassing a wide variety of ecosystems: Andean, Sub-Andean, tropical forest, Pampa, etc. After 4-5 hours of travel on the Tuichi River, we reach Chalalan Ecolodge. In the afternoon, following a presenting on the San Jose de Uchupiamonas indigenous community project, we set off on foot on the Chichilo trail to the Mirador and enjoy great views of the area. After sunset, a short nighttime stroll will introduce us to the area’s animal life. Cold lunch at noon. Full board. Overnight in a lodge. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.

Day 14| Chalan
In the morning, we hike on the Silbador, Mutua, and Anta trails, discovering myriad exotic medicinal plants along the way. In the afternoon, take a dip in the lagoon and hike on the Wichi and Jaguar trails for some bird watching. Traditional evening in the company of our hosts. Full board. Overnight in the lodge.

Day 15| Chalan - La Paz
Hop on a pirogue to Rurrenabaque at 6:30 am, arriving at around 9 am. Return flight from Rurrenabaque to La Paz (1h). Staff welcome at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Overnight in La Paz.

Day 16| Departure
Transfer to La Paz international airport for your international flight.
Breakfast included.
